For close to 18 years, Moldova has not been able to enforce any effective sovereignty whatsoever over Transdniestria, and the territory has ruled its own affairs alone in a state of de-facto independence.

Despite the regularly recurring Moldovan proclamations that “Transnistria is part of Moldova,” official statistics tell another story: Because when it comes to numbers, the Moldovan authorities have long ago stopped counting Transdniestria as part of Moldova’s territory.

Check out the newest report from Moldova’s National Bureau of Statistics: While the numbers are rattled off, note the telling revelation that this is for Moldova proper and that Transdniestria is a separate entity which can not be counted because this is outside of the area controlled by Moldova.
